Agree or Disagree
In David Brooks’ article, “Building Attention Span” he talks about fluid intelligence and crystalized intelligence. He quotes that “researchers have done a lot of work on attention span, and how the brain is being re-sculpted by al1 those hours a day spent online. One of the conclusions that some of them are coming to is that the online life nurtures fluid intelligence and offline life better at nurturing crystalized intelligence.” I disagree with this statement because as an eighteen-year-old who’s life revolves around the internet and social media, has crystallized intelligence. For those who do not know the difference between fluid and crystalized intelligence, fluid intelligence, the ability to solve new problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns. Crystalized intelligence, the ability to use learned knowledge and experience. Using the experiences from when I was younger and even now to make decisions in the present and towards my future.
Another argumentized statement, “This form of social circulation takes the pressure off. I know some people who are relaxed, and their best delves only when online. Since they fell more in control of the communication, they are more communicative, vulnerable and carefree.” The reasoning for not agreeing, is because no one’s really in control of the conversation. Only one can control what they say, but everyone else can say whatever they want freely. Also, some people aren’t relaxed online because they must worry about they say or post because others can and or will judge them. Today’s society revolves around body image and what’s in style. These are the reasons for not agreeing with David Brooks’ article “Building Attention Span.”
